It is difficult to believe that the 175th Anniversary year is two thirds over. Well, it is so.
St. Patrick was founded by the first wave of immigrants to our city - the Irish, who had been brought here by the mill-owners to dig the canals, which provided water power to the looms in the textile mills.
Since those early days, St. Patrick church has been a beacon for other new immigrants to the city, welcoming the wave of South East Asians who came to our city during the post-Vietnam war years. St. Patrick has been blessed with Fr. Anthony Nguyen, who has tirelessly served our Asian community within the parish. Our French neighbors, who were members of the St. Jean Baptist parish, became active members of St. Patrick community when their parish closed.
And now, in 2004, with the tragic closing of many inner-city churches, it seems only natural that the large Hispanic community of Nuestra Senora del Carmen would be merged with the community of St. Patrick, making the composition of St. Patrick parish a mosaic of diverse cultures.
We still have some activities planned during the remainder of this 175th year. These events highlight the best of all the cultures that make up our parish.
